Blackview A95 Review - Even better than I Expected

Blackview A95 Review

As I recently tested the Blackview A55 and A70 Pro models, I expected the new Blackview A95 to be another iteration in the series. But it is not. This time, the company has taken not one but two steps forward.

Introduction

A company that has survived the "sieve and sieve", as they say in our nation. Of course, I am thinking of these two very challenging years that are behind us, and it is expected that this and the next one will be equally challenging. What I want to say is that Blackview is one of the smaller Chinese smartphone manufacturers that holds up well in the very challenging smartphone market, especially since its models mostly "shoot" at the cheap and middle class, as well as robust smartphones.

And I have to admit they do great. I have turned a blind eye to the company's portfolio of smartphones and tablets over the past two years and I see that they have something to boast about - in 2020 they introduced 16, and in 2021 as many as 22 new mobile devices. Not bad for such a "little player".

In 2022, they continued to present new and very interesting smartphones. One of the first to present is the one we are testing and which has only recently entered the European market, and it is the Blackview A95 model. Maybe its design will surprise you and remind you of another very popular model, which is true, I believe that you will quickly understand from the pictures which model it is :)

But what I discovered while testing the A95 models was that they made quite a step forward compared to the models I tested, such as the Blackview A55 or Blackview A70 Pro . Why do I think that? The reason is simple - a much better processor, a lot of working and internal memory, the already mentioned very attractive "flat" design, so there are elements that will win the hearts of customers, especially when you find out the price.

I bought this Blackview A95 smartphone, as well as previous models, for review purposes at the popular domestic SE-MARK webshop , which is an authorized distributor of Blackview smartphones for Croatia, so you have guaranteed service, warranty and customer support.

We will first do a "light" unboxing and see what we got in the box, and then we will find out what it can do and how the A95 works in everyday life.

Unboxing

The box is white, and as usual on the back are its basic features. The box is white, and at the very top is our smartphone. Below it is a special cardboard box with instructions for use, as well as a needle for opening the slot for nanoSIM and microSD cards.

In the lower part of the box there is a charger, as well as a USB Type-C port, both white. Also, on the smartphone itself, there is a transparent silicone case that protects the smartphone from mechanical damage. And that is it… :)

Design

The exterior looks surprisingly beautiful. I say that because this is what much more expensive models look like. I won't go into details, it's not hard to conclude that the Blackview A95 irresistibly resembles iPhone smartphones. You can see this for yourself by the appearance or layout of the rear cameras and LED flash, which are located in the upper left corner. They are a little thrown backwards, but not too much. But after you see the company logo in the lower right corner, you will know which manufacturer it is.

The case is plastic, the model I have on the test is blue gradation color (blue / gray), and it has a tiny dotted texture so there will be no fingerprints. Namely, it is a special 8-layer nano-optical housing with a special coating, so you get a light 3D effect that looks really great and is very comfortable to the touch and resistant to sweating and wear. And as they are especially praised in the company, it is made of ecological materials. The frame is plastic coated on the outside and in the color of the smartphone.

The front is dominated by a large screen with a teardrop notch for the front selfie camera, and it is also interesting how it automatically turns on when you take it in your hand, has a motion sensor and will vibrate slightly. The screen is flat in line with the design, there is a slightly larger "beard" below the screen, while above the screen there is a headset, light and distance sensor, as well as LED notifications.

Of course, all the inputs and outputs are on the edges - at the bottom there is a speaker, USB Type-C input and a microphone, while at the top there is an additional hole for probably another microphone (although the company does not mention it anywhere). On the left is the slot for nanoSIM and microSD cards, while on the right is the volume control button and the power button of the device in which the fingerprint reader is located.

When we talk about the dimensions, they are 163.7 x 75.5 x 8.55 millimeters, so it is compact and relatively thin, and weighs only 195 grams. I like its look, it's comfortable to hold in my hand, it suits me even better without a silicone case. It’s even prettier than I expected.

Screen

The screen is pretty good. The diagonal is 6.53 inches with an IPS matrix, and it is signed by the Chinese manufacturer BOE. As with the A55, this one has an HD + resolution of 720 x 1600 pixels (269 ppi), a 20: 9 aspect ratio and occupies 83.51% of the front surface of the smartphone. It also supports 10-point multitouch, which can be useful for video games.

Regardless of the low resolution, the content of the screen itself is perfectly displayed, the icons and text are clearly and sharply displayed, the colors are clear. Also, you can further adjust the content display in the settings, I usually turn on “Dark Mode” which can reduce battery consumption. Also, the smartphone responds very well to touch, and is easy to clean with an ordinary dry cloth. As the manufacturer does not specify any additional glass protection, my suggestion is to keep the thin foil behind the screen, it will protect it from scratches and other minor mechanical damage.

We measured the brightness of the screen with our measuring instrument and got a result of 247 Lux, which means that it will be difficult for you to use your smartphone on a sunny day, you will have to flee into the shade.

CPU/GPU/RAM/ROM

A pleasant surprise is its hardware configuration, and I say that in relation to previous models that we had the opportunity to test, such as the A55 or A70 Pro. A more significant shift has been made here, so the Blackview A95 boasts an 8-core MediaTek Helio P70 processor (MT6771V / CT) that theoretically runs at 2.1GHz, but all the tests we launched show 2.0GHz. The difference is minimal, in practice it is practically not felt. Here is the core layout:

- 4x ARM Cortex-A73 at 2.0GHz

- 4x ARM Cortex-A53 at 2.0GHz

The processor was developed in TSMC's 12-nanometer FinFET technology at the end of 2018 (Q4 2018), which still looks fresh and promising today. We will remind you how TSMC also produces processors for Apple, so I expect a lot from this processor, I am very interested in how it behaves in video games.

Speaking of gaming, let's say the processor has integrated 3-core ARM Mali-G72 MP3 graphics at 900MHz. Also, you have as much as 8GB of LPDDR4x RAM (dual-channel, 1866MHz), and you also have 128GB of UFS 2.1 expandable internal memory via microSD slot up to 1TB. All in all, for a smartphone of this price range, this is an impressive configuration.

Cameras

The cameras are very solid, but I still have to admit that I expected something more from the rear camera. What is commendable about Blackview smartphones is the great camera management application, which has a really large number of options for setting up photos and videos.

The front camera is 8MP and has an aperture of f / 2.2, so it will be able to take very good photos even in low light. The camera supports Face Unlock and Face Unlock, and a variety of shooting modes are available (HDR, mono, night and portrait). We tried to take a few selfie photos and I have to admit it has quite a bit of detail so it even pleasantly surprised me, especially since it can also capture FHD video at 1920 x 1080 pixels and 30 frames per second ( 1080 @ 30fps ) in MP4 format.

Let’s clear up some things at the rear camera first. Namely, as you can see for yourself, there are three cameras at the back stvari in fact it is one camera (the first one, the upper one) while the other two are just “design expression”. Yes, Blackview's design is reminiscent of the new iPhone, but this is just one camera with solid features. It is a Sony IMX375 sensor of 20MP, with an aperture of f / 1.8, and you also have an LED flash and auto focus. The camera supports face recognition and beautification, as well as HDR, mono, night and portrait mode.

We took a few photos in different shooting conditions and the common conclusion is that they may be a little brighter than they should be and a little more modest in higher contrast scenes, but you can balance that with the built-in HDR function to brighten dark and darken light parts. . When photographing nearby objects, there is a lack of sharpness, which is logical because it does not have a macro camera, and it has very good results when shooting with LED flash and in night mode, which gives a lot of detail and sharpness. Of course, you always have to consider the price of the smartphone in order to evaluate the cameras as objectively as possible. Here are some of our test photos, judge for yourself what they are like.

The camera can also record FHD video at 1920 x 1080 pixels and 30 frames per second ( 1080 @ 30fps ) also in MP4 format. You can see a sample video in the video review below.

Cameras are very usable, but to use the rear camera in some conditions you will need to resort to Pro shooting mode to get better photos.

Audio/video

The speaker is on the bottom which is standard, and I was pleasantly surprised by the sound quality. I remind you once again that this is a very cheap smartphone, so some more expensive models do not have such a good sound. For better quality you will need to purchase an external speaker or headphones, wireless or wired.

We tested the volume on several music tracks in high FLAC quality - with our measuring instrument at a distance of about 40 centimeters (approximately as far as the smartphone is away from your ear when you hold it in your hand) we measured the volume of 81.0 dB, which is slightly above average. In other words, it has enough strength, even its quality is not bad, it is better than I expected.

OS / APP

Like the two previously tested models (Blackview A55 and A70 Pro), this one runs on Android 11 operating system that supports Croatian and other languages (multilanguage). Basic apps are pre-installed, but I also found some handy and useful add-ons.

For example, there is ChildMode, where you first set the code and then the terms of use for kids, then there is the Cold Room which adds special attributes of "lock" to applications, Data Migration application whose name only says what it does, and pre-installed several video games and always popular FM radio.

The smartphone runs fast and fluid, I have not noticed any significant slowdowns so the work will be enjoyable and you will have a great user experience. I didn't expect anything else since it runs on a strong processor and has more than enough RAM.

Connectivity

In short, he has everything he needs for quality communication with his environment. It is a classic 4G LTE smartphone that supports VoLTE on both cards (hybrid Dual SIM (2x nanoSIM or 1x nanoSIM + 1x microSD), so the phone calls themselves will be better. What it may lack is support for NFC, but if you don't use anything because :)

Regarding connectivity, here are the details:

• 2G GSM: 850/900/1800 / 1900MHz

• 3G WCDMA: 900 / 2100MHz

• 4G LTE: 700/850/900/1700/1800/1900/2100/2500 / 2600MHz

• dual- band Wi-Fi 802.11 (ac)

• Bluetooth 4.2

• OTA, OTG, USB Type-C

• GPS (A-GPS, GLONASS, Beidou, Galileo)

GPS works great - during GPS testing we found 31 satellites (19 active) with an accuracy of only 1 meter.

Battery

Another pleasant surprise, all the more so because it is a battery with a lower capacity compared to the A55 and A70 Pro that we tested earlier. In particular, it is a lithium-polymer battery with a capacity of 4380mAh that cannot be removed (non-removable), and supports solid fast charging (5V / 3A charger). So in the box is a 15W charger that at first glance does not seem a bit fast, but again I was pleasantly surprised by the charging speed.

Specifically, we tested this in five consecutive charges and discharges and obtained the following results:

- 57% in 30 minutes

- 96% in 60 minutes

- 100% in 670 minutes (1:07 hours)

In our surfing endurance test with the screen constantly on (50% brightness), the battery lasted as long as 12 hours and 19 minutes, which is more than 50% more durable than the average battery life of 8 hours. In other words, the battery should last one or maybe two days without any problems in "Normal" use. It's all up to you. Here's what else the battery can last:

- up to 6 hours of video game play

- up to 7 hours of video watching

- up to 8 hours of web surfing

- up to 18 hours of phone calls

- up to 25 hours of music listening

- up to 192 hours of standby time

Video games

For the first time we are testing a smartphone running on a Helio P70 processor so I am keenly interested in how the video games will work. Theoretically they should work pretty well, but let’s give it a try in practice. We won't go on, here are our gamer impressions.

- PUBG Mobile - a third-person network shooter - find weapons and fix everything you can around you! The game works with occasional loud pauses, the device warms up a bit.

- Real Racing 3 - still the most realistic racing simulation on the Android platform, a real challenge to play and test… .. the game works from constant twitching, the processor fails to keep up with graphics. The warm-up of the smartphone is still very low.

I have to admit I am very pleased. True, this is a 2018 processor, but it has proven to be very good for more graphically demanding video games. Well done to Blackview.

Benchmark tests

We have also done a handful of synthetic benchmark tests that can serve as a guide to the power, speed and capabilities of this device.

Evo benchmark brojki:

– AnTuTu – 181328

– Geekbench – 288 (Single-Core), 1275 (Multi-Core)

Conclusion

Honestly, I didn’t really expect the new Blackview A95 to manage to elicit a smile on my face, but it did. Namely, the smartphone has several elements that turned out to be better than I expected. One of them is its appearance, which is simple and recognizable, we explained earlier.

The hardware configuration itself is perfectly balanced so the smartphone runs fast and fluid in all operating conditions, even in video games. You’ll also like the battery life as well as the fast charge, while the sound on the speaker itself is even slightly better than previous models. What some will miss is NFC support, and there is only one camera in the back. The screen is still only HD + resolution, but if you did not know this information, I believe most would think that the resolution is higher.

And this time I can freely conclude that this is a reliable and cost-effective smartphone that should find its way to its many new owners. You will find the Blackview A95 at a very reasonable price on the popular domestic SE-MARK webshop , an authorized distributor and repairer for the Blackview brand, and its price is currently only 1,599 kuna or about 213 euros (as we wrote this review).
